Hunting, fishing, boating and bird watching opportunities abound at nearby Doty Ponds, Brush Prairie Ponds, Jackson Lake and Prewitt Reservoir. Youth under 16 are not required to have a fishing license at these areas.

At left is Prewitt Reservoir and below is the South Platte River. Both offer ample outdoor activities.

Brush Prairie Ponds
Hunting * Nature Viewing
This 1600-acre state wildlife area provides opportunity to view wildlife in it natural prairie and riparian habitat. Wildlife includes waterfowl, pheasant, rabbit and deer. Viewing is from February through the first waterfowl hinting season. Access is limited to areas posted.
Brush State Wildlife Area

Wildlife in this 588-acreage along the South Platte River includes deer, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, turkey, bobwhite quail, dove and a variety of waterfowl. Bass fishing is available in nearby Charitier Ponds. To get there: From Brush go 2.5 miles north on Hwy. 71 to County Road 28, continue north 1 mile on gravel road.
Cottonwood State Wildlife Area

This 884.5 acre area is a primary hinting area for deer, pheasant, turkey, bobwhite quail, squirrel, rabbit and waterfowl. During non-hunting seasons, the area provides good opportunities for wildlife viewing. To get there: From the town of Snyder (which is 7 miles from Brush on Hwy. 71), drive 2 miles east on County Road W.7.
Dodd Bridge State Wildlife Area

A prime 903-acre area for hunting deer, pheasant, bobwhite quail, waterfowl, dove, rabbit, squirrel and turkey. The scenery along the South Platte River also provides excellent wildlife and nature viewing during non-hunting season. To get there: Drive west 5 miles from Brush to Dodd Bridge Road, then north on Dodd Bridge Road approximately 4 miles until you reach the river.
Elliot State Wildlife Area

Deer, pheasant, bobwhite quail, rabbit, squirrel, turkey and waterfowl reside in this 2,136 acres located 6 miles northeast of Snyder on County Road W.7. Union Tract is closed to all access except for specified days during waterfowl season. During non-hunting season, it is a calm, peaceful area for nature study.
Jackson Lake

This large lake is home to trout, walleyes, bass, catfish, perch, crappie and wipers. Hunting season for waterfowl, dove, pheasant and rabbits run from the Tuesday after Labor Day through the Friday prior to Memorial Day. 180 campsites with showers, toilets and drinking water. Call 800-678-2267 to reserve a space. Ice fishing begins after the close of waterfowl hunting season. Located 32 miles northwest of Brush (take I-76 to Wiggins Exit, then north on Hwy. 39. Prewitt Resevoir

Prewitt Reservoir, 13 miles northeast of Brush along Hwy. 6, is a haven for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The lake is largely undeveloped, but has a boat ramp and other amenities. $3 user fee at gate or $5 annual pass.
